What can I expect at my first therapy session?
Your first therapy session is an important step on your path to healing and personal growth. While the specifics may vary depending on the therapist and their approach, here’s a general overview of what you can typically expect:
- Safety & Security Check
If the session is Virtual (Video or Phone) your therapist will ensure you are in a safe and secure environment before proceeding. We are required to take down the address of your location in case of emergency and confirm the best number to reach you at if you get disconnected.
- Review of Confidentiality & Clinic Policies
You will have been sent an Intake & Consent Form in advance of your appointment which outlines all the Clinic Policies and Confidentiality. Your therapist will review some of the key policies such as our Cancellation Policy, Confidentiality, and if you are receiving Couples / Relationship Therapy they will also review the No Secrets Policy. They will answer any questions you may have.
- Building your Relationship
The first session is also an opportunity for you to get to know your therapist and for them to get to know you. Building a trusting and comfortable relationship is crucial for the success of therapy. You can expect your therapist to be empathetic, non-judgmental, and supportive.
- Session Structure:
Your therapist will explain how sessions are typically structured, including the duration (usually 50 minutes) and frequency (weekly, bi-weekly, etc.).
- Discussing Goals:
Your therapist will work with you to define your therapy goals. These could be specific issues you want to address, personal growth objectives, or areas in your life where you seek improvement. Setting clear goals helps guide the therapy process.
- Therapeutic Approach:
Your therapist may explain their therapeutic approach and how they plan to work with you. They will discuss the techniques or strategies they may use to help you achieve your goals.
- Questions & Concerns
Feel free to ask any questions or express any concerns you may have about the therapy process. Your therapist is there to provide clarification and ensure that you feel comfortable and informed. Your therapist may also ask follow-up questions about answers on your Intake & Consent Form.
- Beginning the Work:
Depending on your therapist’s approach, the first session may involve starting to explore your thoughts, emotions, or the issues you’re facing. It’s a safe space to begin discussing your concerns and working toward your goals.
- Next Steps:
Toward the end of the session, you and your therapist will discuss what to expect in future sessions and any immediate steps you can take outside of therapy to support your progress. It is recommended that you have your next 4 sessions booked to protect a preferred time slot in your therapists schedule.
Remember that therapy is a collaborative process, and the first session is just the beginning. It’s natural to have mixed emotions or uncertainty, but your therapist is there to support you and guide you on your journey towards improved mental health and well-being. Over time, therapy can help you gain insights, develop coping skills, and make positive changes in your life.
