What if a parent or caregiver attends a session without the child?
When a parent or caregiver attends a session without the child, and the session is to support the child’s psychotherapy treatment, we issue the receipt in the name of the parent/caregiver who attended the session.
However, to ensure the purpose of the session is clear and to support potential insurance reimbursement, the receipt will include a statement such as:
“A session was provided to [Parent/Caregiver Name] for the purpose of psychotherapy treatment of their child, [Child’s Full Name].”
This satisfies our regulatory documentation requirements while often allowing the session to be submitted under the child’s name for insurance purposes, as the clinical focus remains on the child’s care, even if they were not present.
If the session is not related to the child’s treatment (e.g., it’s support for parenting in general or unrelated personal therapy), the receipt will only reflect the adult client’s name and the service they received.
